Gran Chiriquí: The Finest Expression of Chilean Chardonnay
4 de February de 2026
A refined white wine that pays tribute to an ancient culture and to the Limarí Valley, giving life to a wine where identity, origin and elegance come together in perfect harmony.
Viña Santa Rita presents Gran Chiriquí, the first Chardonnay conceived as a stand-alone wine within its high-end Colección de Origen range. Inspired by Chile’s extraordinary endemic diversity and the uniqueness of its wines, this portfolio represents the highest expression of the country’s winemaking tradition and the potential of some of its most outstanding terroirs.
This delicately fine Chardonnay comes from a small, one-hectare vineyard and is crafted from micro-parcels located in the finest blocks of the Limarí Valley, in order to achieve the purest expression of its origin. Its character is deeply shaped by proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the low elevation of the Coastal Range, which—together with a cool climate and calcareous soils—give rise to a wine where identity, origin and elegance converge in perfect harmony.
Its name pays tribute to the Gran Chiriquí culture, a pre-Columbian cultural period that developed in what is now the Chiriquí region in western Panama between approximately 800 and 1500 AD. Renowned for its ceramic and metalworking traditions, this culture left a legacy that is now preserved at the Museo Andino of Fundación Claro Vial, in partnership with Viña Santa Rita.
In the museum’s Gold Room, a miniature duck-shaped pendant from the Gran Chiriquí culture stands out. It was recovered after the 2022 robbery when a vineyard worker, upon learning of the theft, recognized its origin and returned it to its rightful place. Today, it is once again on display as a reminder of the value of cultural heritage and the importance of protecting it. This same symbol of history and resilience is reflected on the label of this new wine, as a tribute to its cultural richness.
Gran Chiriquí was aged for 20 months in old French oak barrels, followed by four months in concrete vats prior to bottling, refining its texture and complexity. It stands out for its excellent balance, freshness and minerality, offering delicate floral and fruit notes, subtly integrated oak and a long, persistent finish.
“A white wine that expresses the character of the Limarí Valley and its proximity to both the Atacama Desert and the ocean, with unique acidity and salinity. Fermentation and ageing in barrel add depth and sophistication, integrating a pronounced mineral profile with nuances of ripe fruit illuminated by northern light. We are very proud of the quality achieved in this first vintage, which reflects the exceptional potential of its origin and the work carried out in the vineyard,” says Teresita Ovalle, winemaker at Viña Santa Rita, named Best Young Winemaker by La CAV in 2024 and recognized among the most influential figures in Chilean wine in 2025.
This label has already received significant accolades: it was awarded 97 points in the Guía Descorchados 2026, where it was named Revelation Wine and included among the top 10 best white wines, as well as among the country’s best Chardonnays and the leading wines of Northern Chile.
Gran Chiriquí is a limited-edition wine, with a production of only 440 bottles, created for discerning palates that value authenticity and sophistication. Available exclusively in Chile.
